”Whatever you do, set out to win. Winning doesn’t mean always being first. It is a performance constant, so that, over time, you’re in a predictive and productive environment with partners you admire and judgments that you’re proud of” - Don Valentine

You know what would be fun? An app to place bets on what becomes trendy after a given event. I would go long on bad Russia takes right now.

Four trends that seem to reinforce each other but I haven't come across a great explanation as to why yet: - The lack of "heroes" in our society - The rise of secularism - The power and voice that social media gives to individuals - The fall of traditional media platforms

Damn bros. We're less than 200 unique viewers away from our monthly active users goal that we had set for March. If you haven't checked out Juked yet... maybe you could today? 8)

“The fall of the mediators, all things being equal, means the end of the regime’s ability to rule by persuasion.” The Revolt of the Public by might go down as one of the most important books of the last decade. We’ve barely started to understand his theory.

Saw Peter Thiel speak in New York City tonight. My favorite quotes: 1) “A random vision of the future is an abdication of agency.” 2) “The main function of our iPhone is to distract us from subways that are 100 years old.”

Do something you don't hate. Do something you're not terrible at. Do something other people will pay you for. That's how you discover—and ultimately do—what makes you come alive.

The NYT making a big, wanky to-do about its endorsement, and that amounting to a taco fart in a tornado compared to the Rogan endorsement brouhaha, possesses a real-world A/B test beauty and finality to it. We know what matters, and why those who don't are going crazy.

A hypothesis on the topic: Founders of remote companies focus on building scalable processes more than local teams out of great pain and necessity. If they become uniquely great at this, these processes (not being remote per se) could serve as a differentiator for the company.

This is a *very* underrated point. Having had the chance to interact with a few CEOs who have been very successful at growing remote-first companies, one of the commonalities I see among them is an obsessive discipline when it comes to building processes.

FWIW, I actually think the argument is directionally right. I'd just have more sympathy for it if it was not being made, 9 out of 10 times, by a bunch of finance-type folks who just like to dunk on venture capital and tech, and say these things just to make themselves sound smart

You can tell a narrative about startups is getting pretty boring when you start to see articles about it on mainstream media.

The pursuit of balance in life can be misleading; when moderation in anything and everything becomes the end goal, it turns into the pursuit of mediocrity.
