I'd rather make it easy for everyone to use a library (like say Abseil) than try to standardize everything.

Sure, but then we should stop spending *obnoxious* amounts of money on the standard library. My users actually want the standard library to cover this kind of stuff. They shouldn't need 90% of what is in Abseil (or other similar libs). But, as you point out, today they do. =/

What's sad is that they've got all kinds of frankly useless stuff in the C++ run-time, but *actually useful stuff* like thread names (super valuable for debugging or examining crash dumps etc.) they don't want to add.

I can't even reliably deploy and depend on the perf. and behavior of std::vector (yes - a basic dynamic array) in open source code deployed into commercial C++ apps. FWIW I don't think C++ is going in the right direction.

Maybe our philosophy is just wrong? AFAIK C was designed with no standard library in mind. The idea was that everything else could be implemented as a library, sometimes just a syscall wrapper. Even malloc and free were not part of the core language. 1/?

For some time C++ has been like that. Now we seem to try to standardize on everything. I’m not an expert of course, but my belief is that C++ should have standardized on core language and its ABIs, and had suggested a list of existing libraries (could be community driven) 2/?

This is one of the reasons why Rust is constantly blinking an Eye at C++ devs.

Can you please also add thread affinity and priority/scheduler settings?
