out of curiosity, when men tweet about unethical algorithms, do you get a bunch of @'s explaining to you how machine learning works?

During my first taste of (stem-barbie-related) internet notoriety, someone wrote a VERY LONG blog post explaining why I am not a real computer scientist. This STILL affects me. I am constantly nervous about being de-legitimized and having my expertise questioned.

takeaways based on replies: (1) no, most men (regardless of their CS cred) do not tend to get ML explained to them (2) but this does happen to a lot of women (and I'm guessing also non-binary folks) (2) gender issues aside, CS has a gatekeeping problem that needs to stop

for example, there was a letter to the editor in CACM many years ago that argued that "discussing the social and ethical impact of computing is not doing computer science." Anyway, I disagree. DOWN WITH GATEKEEPING. Because apparently, in part, it's keeping the ethics out.

I just have to add that, reading responses to this and related threads for the past 24 hours, has made me both angry and sad. So here's a question: What do we DO about it? Can we de-legitimize the gatekeeping and the sexism? How?

Broadening participation in CS efforts are useless with such a narrow definition of CS. Especially since - coincidentally - "not CS-y enough" fields like HCI and computing ethics often attract folks from underrepresented groups. Let's bring people in & then de-legitimize them!
