I wrote this piece for @HowWeGetToNext about how a lot of researchers are making ethical decisions about data collection all wrong - whether it's "public" is NOT the only thing that should matter. Here's more stuff you should be thinking about.

There are a few rules/procedures on this page, but in general, just be thoughtful & respectful! And if you are reading the book but haven't finished yet, you may want to mute until you're done in case some tweets include spoilers (& then come back!)

In THEORY faculty life (pre-tenure at least) is supposed to be roughly 40% research, 40% teaching, and 20% service. This exercise was basically to validate what everyone says, which is that that breakdown is laughable. I found this usefully introspective, and recommend trying it.

Service includes non-research meetings (faculty, committees, etc.), department-level service (PhD admissions, grad student affairs), external service (conference organizing, ethics committee work, etc.), and paper reviewing/program committees.

Teaching is lower than it would be in a typical semester because I only taught one class last semester and it had less in-classroom time than usual because it was hybrid in-person/online.
