I wrote a one-sentence synopsis of my book: It's a memoir-in-essays about transience, and about the ways that capitalism and colonialism rob people of a sense of home and belonging, and about how to resist those feelings of displacement in an era that seems to amplify them

One lovely thing about adulthood is that, if you're lucky, you find people who were into the same weird books that you loved as a kid, and you realize that you weren't just a lone weirdo absorbed in words. There were other kids like you... you just hadn't found them yet

Victims of rape or incest have to show proof or must carry the baby. That means a 12-year-old girl raped by her father has to go to the police and prove it happened. These people are fucking monsters.

My God. Ron DeSantis’ new abortion ban requires rape and incest victims to show their “documents” to prove they got raped. If they can’t provide it, they will be forced to give birth to their rapist’s baby. people.com/health/rape-in

It just occurred to me that without my dad, no one will keep me abreast of what's happening with the Red Sox. Casual sports fans who live away from your team, how do you stay in the loop without subscribing to a special TV station or checking a special website every day?

As an editor , I read many pitches on traditional ecological knowledge, Indigenous conservation, etc, which are—rightly—getting lots of attn. But it’s easy for non-Indigenous writers to mess up. ’s primer is a resource I’ll be returning to again & again 👇

Anyway, I'm trying to make Indigenous-led conservation a thing, and this is how I'm trying to explain it the world Maybe it's right, but it probably needs some work Read more here: americanprogress.org/article/5-ways

For a story: Do you have or can you point me toward a photo showing the stunning but subtle beauty of old-growth pinyon-juniper forest? Has to be high quality for publication, and they pay, of course. TIA!

“Nonfiction seems to me photographic; it poses the same challenge of finding form and pattern in the stuff already out there and the same ethical obligations to the subject. Fiction like painting lets you start with a blank canvas.” —

I have so many things to say about this oddly antagonistic feature, but I’ll hold them in and share ’s clear-headed response instead

I wasn't going to comment on this piece, but seeing as how I'm in the lede, I want to offer my two cents about why we see more climate reporting shifting away from "doomism" harpers.org/archive/2023/0

Watching Fleishman is in Trouble and marveling that it seems totally normal to put your kids to bed in a Manhattan apartment and then just… leave for a few hours??

Great info; disagree that young people should just "move to the first city that sounds attractive." If u have community where u are, try staying. Try to make it more equitable. Uprooting yourself to chase the American dream only exacerbates the isolation that capitalism feeds off

Median income to median house price ratio in the US. As a young person you should essentially read the list from the top downwards and move to the first city that sounds attractive to you. Sometimes long images end up with low res on social —> Source: buff.ly/3ZCaYhM

One of my absolute favorite creatures when I lived in Southeast Alaska 😢 I always dreamed of taking my daughter back to my old spots and showing her the abundance of weird, wild tidal life

My first-ever for , in collaboration with , is a love note to seagrass, the tiny "epifauna" that cling to each strand, and all the bigger creatures (us included) that we're now realizing depend on seagrass in much the same way.

It just occurred to me that Ross Gay and Brian Doyle have a similarly rambling ecstatic writing style and OF COURsE they are both among my absolute favorites

Can anyone point me to a really good synthesis, academic or literary, of how colonialism and capitalism profit off the displacement and alienation of people?

Found a front-page paper from 2011 that featured THREE stories by me?!? About murder, protests, and environmental wrongdoing?! And I probably wrote like five other stories that week too. God I was a beast. Anyone who does daily news for their entire career is an absolute legend
