Saying, “No thank you, I got it,” to the middle-aged white man on the airplane who offered—and began—to take my suitcase out of the overhead compartment for me was a quickly calculated act of resistance.

It wasn’t the offer to help, it was taking down the bag without a response from you. It was sweet, yes, and also disrespectful. It was knowing he wouldn’t act this way with a male peer. It was the infantilizing. I get you. ❤️

That may not be correct, however. I’ve had men grab my carry on because they were right there, and Ive done it for other men as well. Not sure that was infantilizing (of course, we can never know). It COULD have been, or it could have simply been common decency. Just sayin'

Maybe just don’t touch someone’s bag without asking? I think that’s far more courteous than any choice in this situation, no?

Maybe society is better off if we don’t have to ask for permission before displaying common courtesy.

It’s really NOT hard to just be like “Can I get that for you?” Asking and getting an answer literally takes less time than tweeting about how much you don’t want to have to ask permission.

Used to fly at least once a week, less now(still at least once a month).Boarding is a hassle. The sooner the bags are stored the faster plane leaves gate and not lose its turn in take-off line. I helped without asking, men/women x times. I am a woman.I hate flying...

If it was really only about the reaching for the bag part, then what's the point in sharing the race and gender of the person?
