I spend a significant amount of time thinking about the false narratives the media perpetuates and portrays, one of which is that "break out" artists and writers come out of nowhere, as if they hadn't been working on and honing their craft for years, or usually decades.

Or as if they are not part of both micro and macro communities of other wildly talented artists and writers who have built them boats and rockets and vehicles of love and support and encouragement for years, or usually decades.

Or as if they are not also in conversation with centuries, or usually millennia, or craft and historical context and artistic revolutions, as well as capitalistic and patriarchal and White Supremacist erasures that have dictated whose voice is visible and accessible when.

These false narratives and erasures break my heart. I hope one day the editors and journalists who perpetuate these - and other - sensationalized headlines will take a moment to consider the context. Consider the time spent. Consider the thousands of days that it takes to evolve.
