A funny thing about #amwriting is that every piece has its own soul. For me, that's every poem. Every article. Every monologue. Every piece of prose. For those of us who both make art and teach how to make art, it's funny to preach a practice...
...and then forget to practice it. For example, I regularly say (to audiences, students, workshop participants, etc.) that each piece will tell you what it needs. Then here I am working on this feature article and it's telling me how it wants to be written, and I'm fighting it.
I'm like: but that's now how xyz article got written, and that's not how that poem came to be, and that's not how my one-woman play went from a book proposal to a script. And I have to remind myself to listen. To listen to this article. It's speaking to me, and I'm the vessel.
I'm not actually the creator. I heard an idea, and I let it root itself inside of me. And it's already been growing. I just have to sit here and walk around the tree and dictate what it is I see. And this tree is a different tree than all the other trees. And I cannot doubt.
