...and then forget to practice it. For example, I regularly say (to audiences, students, workshop participants, etc.) that each piece will tell you what it needs. Then here I am working on this feature article and it's telling me how it wants to be written, and I'm fighting it.

I'm like: but that's now how xyz article got written, and that's not how that poem came to be, and that's not how my one-woman play went from a book proposal to a script. And I have to remind myself to listen. To listen to this article. It's speaking to me, and I'm the vessel.

I'm not actually the creator. I heard an idea, and I let it root itself inside of me. And it's already been growing. I just have to sit here and walk around the tree and dictate what it is I see. And this tree is a different tree than all the other trees. And I cannot doubt.
