I have never once heard this when it comes to conservative politics. It's always about how true you are to your constituents, for them anyway. How novel.

Yeah, conservatives don't give a crap about the middle ground. It's only nominally left-of-centre parties that think they have to chase it, which probably explains why it's shifted so far to the right over the last three decades.

There is 300mil people in the US yet we only have 2 ideological options when it comes to politics. I don't fit into either left or right. Im sure I'm not the only one.

There is no "middle-ground" for a centrist to occupy at this point. You are either for the rule of law, or you are for Trump/Russia/Autocracy. There's no longer any valid, meaningful definition of "centrist".
