Casual reminder from your friendly neighborhood seismologist that earthquakes can happen at any time. If you haven't yet done so: 1) Learn how to drop, cover, & hold on. 2) Make a kit with water, food, flashlights, first aid, etc. 3) Just text your crush already. Like, go for it.

Casual reminder that our planet isn't the only one with totally awesome polar ice caps. Image: NASA Mars Global Surveyor

An overhead view of Mars' north pole. A large patch of white with swirling striations of rusty brown.

“When you ask women why they left, the number one reason they cite is balancing work/life responsibilities — which as far as I can tell is a euphemism for family concerns.” *whispers* an environment that does not allow women to balance work/life is another form of sexism

Fun illustration of the different speeds of P- & S-waves from this mornings M4.4 earthquake near Mammoth. Notice the P-S time gap near the epicenter (3 mi) is 4.5 seconds. 160 miles away near Ridgecrest the P-S gap is 29 seconds. (data from Station Monitor)

Without context, my original tweet also sounds a bit glib and monolith-y. Sorry about that, and thanks to the rad people who stepped up with expansions before I did!

...and 2. He implies that non-white non-men are a monolith, when in fact white women benefit hugely from white privilege, and there's a lot of other facets of identity that can come with advantages or disadvantages, too.

From what my friend told me, this dude's views are yikes for two major reasons: 1. He implies that people of color and white women were inherently less qualified and only hired to make the department look diverse...

I've seen a little discussion about this tweet, so here's an expansion. This is in reference to a garbage heap of a dude that a friend told me about. They're both in a university physics dept, a field with a long history of issues in equity and inclusion across gender and race.

I misheard the word "allochthonous" as "the Loch Ness" for a second, and now I'm 100% down for comparisons of geologic terranes to mysterious lake monsters.

Fun fact I recently learned: Caltech has something like 1400 emergency eye wash/shower stations. They need regular tests to meet safety standards, so there's one person whose entire job is to check them, a few dozen a day, starting right over again as soon as they're all tested.

If you're going to call every new person of color or white woman a "diversity hire" then you also have to call every new white man a "privilege hire". Don't blame me, those are just the rules.

Redundancy is where you have an extra set of hardware in case something goes wrong. Redudeancy is where you have too many dudes in a meeting.

The Jamaican M7.7 is not related to the Puerto Rican quake. Triggering of another quake happens within ~3x length of the 1st fault. The PR quake was on a ~15 mile long fault, but the M7.7 was over 800 miles away. Way too far away to be related.

This is big. But it’s also offshore, pretty much directly between Cuba, Jamaica, & the Cayman Islands. And it’s a strike-slip, so tsunami risk is low.

Waves from the M 7.7 Caribbean have rolled in to seismometers at ! You can clearly see the arrivals of the different wave phases. For more info about this event, go to: – mjesto: Seismological Laboratory @ Caltech

Seismograph traces on a computer screen. A small primary wave is followed by a secondary wave and then big wiggly surface waves on every line.
