Just out: 'Social evolution and the individual-as-maximising-agent analogy' - a paper of mine on whether, when and how it may be correct to see nature or biological individuals as maximising agents (in SHPS C):

Incidentally, I found out that I may now feel physically nauseous just from reading descriptions of bloody episodes. This is a new low - after becoming nearly unable to watch horror movies, to withstand the sight of my own blood, and needing rest after local (!) anesthetics.

And also on the fact that anesthesia emboldened surgeons, who multiplied surgical acts; this led to more infections in hospitals (as sterilisation wasn't there yet) and to an increased pressure for their prevention and treatment. Interesting dynamics!

... provides many info regarding the state of medicine and hospitals in the mid-1850s. Especially interesting was the focus on the variation in the qualities asked of surgeons before (strength, speed) and after (precision, care) the introduction of anesthetics and sterilisation.

Back to Fitzharris' book, which although not philosophical, proves quite useful when ones teaches the scientific method through the classical examples of Semmelweis and Snow. The book, in addition to being rich in (sometimes hard to stomach) details about surgery procedures...

I'm at the dentist today which reminds me of "The Tooth Worm as Hell's Demon,” 18th century. Carved from ivory, the two halves open up to reveal a scene about the infernal torments of a tooth worms which people believed caused cavities in the past.

Simon Larbalestier - the artist who made the iconic photographs that graced The Pixies early studio albums & singles. He graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1987. His recent images are landscapes of Italy, the USA & Australia - which look reassuringly Pixies-ish.
