10mbps for 4k ouch
Actually I’ll see what 24MBPS does but I doubt it will be a leap since it’s all talking head A-Roll but it was shot on a C300 and it was originally a 43GB file...
Any opinion on encoding in VP8 for upload to YouTube? It takes twice as long as H.264 to encode and produces a smaller file size, but processing after upload is really fast. I'm thinking about setting up a watch directory with Handbrake to offload that task to my Linux box.
Gotta figure out what your priorities are. Does the quicker upload time offset the longer render time for your resource needs? For me it's the opposite:it takes way longer to render a compressed format than to upload uncompressed so I just give YouTube uncompressed cineform/dnxhr
If I upload in h.264, it may take hours or days before for all resolutions become available. My views during that time is often meh. If I upload in VP8, I get significantly more views in the first hour. My suggested videos went from 0% to 3%, if I'm reading my data correctly.
That's interesting and bizarre. I know transcoding resources are allocated based on channel size to a degree, but my h264 uploads almost always process instantly
My understanding is that VP8 is the native codec for 360p to 1080p. If you upload 1080p in VP8, it immediately renders all other resolutions. If you upload 1080p in h.264, it has to be converted to VP8 first and queue for that can be very long.
Other than for high view channels YouTube actually defaults to AVC (H264) for the first-pass transcoding for most people. VP9/VP8 (I don't see much of that anymore) only kicks in after time/views or if you're 1440p+ unless it's changed in the past like 3 mo.s
VP8 was what made this error message disappear from the upload screen. “Your videos will process faster if you encode into a streamable file format.”
