10 years ago I tried to model the evolution of the OSS market, and wrote "I believe that in the long term the market equilibrium will be based on a set of service-based companies (providing high specialization) and development consortia (providing core economies of scale)."
If you look now- the majority of large effort is coordinated in consortia like @EclipseFdn @linuxfoundation @TheASF and others- not by any individual private company. Smaller efforts aggregate private effort around a single project like @AWSOpen & others did on Elasticsearch
