the douthat column is substantively pretty mundane, and the fact that he's made everybody give it an avalanche of hateclicks anyway is the reason he makes the big bucks
i guess it takes having reading douthat more, but douthat is not a guy who is particularly happy about the commodification of sex. he also doesnt give any air time to incel weirdos in the piece

Interesting. I guess hot mess garbage thinkpieces are mundane, but putting forth the idea of sexual redistribution for philosophical discussion is icky and abhorrent! I wish I could take back my hate click. NYT op-ed loves to get my hate clicks.
-
He's saying that liberals and libertarians have created the environment where this abhorrent idea will flourish, right? It's even worse than what I originally thought he was saying.
-
question — do you favor the legalization and regulation of sex work?
-
I favor not being trapped in this argument, get to the point.
-
serious question. I think I do, do you?
-
I'm not sure. I know a lot of sex workers advocate for it for themselves, and I can see how it might give them more agency and take power away from pimps and sex traffickers.
-
legalized sex work is a way of using the market to redistribute the experiential commodity of sex - it’s a kind of sexual redistributionism. before the recent blow-up I’d never thought to think of it in those terms
-
I see that angle but talking about bodies as currency requires some nuance, especially regarding sexual violence. Also I think this discussion can only happen after fair pay, parental leave, and opportunities for women are real.
