New reporting from the huge ongoing 12-year universal basic income experiment in Kenya. The BBC returns to the same village it visited 5 years ago: "My life before, I had worries, but now, I feel so excited. I'm very happy. There is a change in the village." "The money does… Show more

A critical element of any #basicincome must be inclusiveness. That's the essence of universality and so in #UBI, especially and particularly for young refugees.

The real version of this story is that *all* young people leaving care in Wales receive a basic income of £1,600 a month (approx. £1,250 after tax). The same applies to refugee children who arrived in Wales unaccompanied by an adult. But that doesn’t fit cruel Tory narratives. twitter.com/AndrewRTDavies…

Can you understand the writing here? The obsolete symbol “Yogh” indicated a guttural “Yh” sound in old Scottish handwriting: these examples are the equivalent of “You” and “Year”. Download our free kit to learn how to read old Scottish handwriting 👇 bit.ly/NRSHandwriting
The words “You” and “Year” in archaic script. Both begin with a symbol like a lower-case “y”: the obsolete symbol “Yogh”

It'd only be inflationary if folk don't return their stuff. Yes, the first thing you buy will cost more than the one you bought before DRS launches but if you return it and buy another...it costs the same again. That's why it's a deposit return scheme and not a recycling tax.
Quote Tweet
Even bigger problem. UK government source considers the scheme “inflationary” and “bad for consumers” and indicates they will not grant an exemption from UK internal market rules, which would make it extremely difficult for the scheme to go ahead in any meaningful way twitter.com/GlennBBC/statu…

Brilliant thread by #UBI hero who has clearly had enough of ludicrous conspiracy theorists who claim universal economic security is some kind of elite trick to enslave us. [Hang in there Scott, where right behind you mate!] //

2/ First of all, most obviously, UBI is unconditional. It's in the damn definition. If cash comes with strings attached, it's not UBI. So you can't make the argument that UBI will be conditional. That's like arguing against water because it's dehydrated and won't quench thirst.

Fiddling around with a social security system that is fundamentally unfit for purpose cannot be alleviated through measures that build on those flaws. Minimum Income Guarantee cannot overcome foundations built on that system. A Universal Basic Income can. Cbin.scot
