Our democracy is dying, the academic job market sucks, and it is amazingly still January. Anything else?

Great piece here by dean William Treanor, who has been doing deep dive & analysis on the understudied Gouverneur Morris. Why Morris's views during the key debates of the convention of 1787 changed --and why that matters.

Since I often get qs about 18th c white men (from men who get annoyed when I don’t have answers), this is refreshing

A friend of mine told me in high school that this was her trick to doing well in school. I quickly adopted it and can now say that a) it helps me to actively listen and b) it is SO much better than staring at blank faces while giving a lecture.

Richmond, Virginia hasn't seen this many armed white men since the Confederate army abandoned the city on April 2, 1865.

Trying to be deliberate about not referring only to men by surnames and women by first names is a constant struggle

Been doing an informal Bechdel test for history the last years, and I’m going to be more intentional this year. Astonishing how few women speak & are full historical actors— found this in lots of work I like/ admire. This isn’t just a source issue.
