Publishers spend a lot of time working out which age-bracket to aim things at and how to 'level-up' the content to lead children into a life of reading books aimed at adults. Some kids pick adult books up earlier than others, and that's fine. But it is always considered. (3/4)
The important thing is that we're engaging with kids and encouraging them to read. And part of that is challenging them to deal with trickier concepts and subject matters, at the right point for them. (4/4)
Yeah, but everyone is different. Some kids will read books aimed at older children / adults. Some won't. This is the first step in trying to make sure that there is something from everyone.
As someone who teachers ten year olds and is constantly fighting apathy about reading (especially with boys) thank you for being so thoughtful about this and laying it out for the doubters. As I said yesterday, these books will be part of my classroom library from day 1.

As he stated earlier though, not all kids are the same, kids go to adult books at different ages.
You might have been fine with IT, other kids may have a negative reaction to heads being ripped off or flying leeches, or sexual content. IT is a good book though. 
I was reading James Herbert when I was 12, but I was also reading Doctor Who novelisations. One doesn't preclude the other.
