But the person then said “that person isn’t a sexist/racist; they’re just an asshole to everyone equally”. And then we all had a good laugh. Thing is, though, we laugh bc it’s viewed as perfectly fine in our profession. 2/n

Very smart people think of their intelligence as like wealth out of which they spend, and sometimes they spend by being truly horrible people, and it’s supported implicitly and explicitly in equilibrium for some reason. 3/n

I have no tolerance for norms that take such a transactional approach. For one, the brain is probably the most overrated organ in the body so to let it drive those ledgers is already baloney. But second, I also suspect these people over estimate their scarcity. 4/n

That kind of implies if these truly nightmarish bad actors were knocked down a notch from time to time, even deprived resources, I’m skeptical we’d lose scientifically as much as we fear. Truth finds it’s way out. 6/n

But even then, Frankly, im exhausted by the notion that excellence in ones craft gives you a free pass to treat people beneath you in such horrible ways. Just seems like we have to insist on new norms. The AEA doesn’t and not surprisingly a hole gets filled with garbage 7/n
