This still makes no sense to me though. #purpleair monitors in sf should be working at 8am on Sunday but EPA website (http://airnow.gov ) has SF in the red.

I just got this text message explaining thatpic.twitter.com/PzBEjjx2J0
Hopefully they run on battery reserve and then upload when signal is reestablished? That would at least be something.
PurpleAir is a network of mostly amateur sensors, it's basically crowdsourced. You can go on their web site, buy the kit, and install it at your house. So I doubt many of these people have any sort of back-up like that in place.
On the other hand we now know that air quality maps can also double as power outage maps
Can we take up a collection to buy them UPSes?...
Well, that might just get them stolen. A lot of people are gonna be desperate for even a little power and a nice high quality UPS could be quite attractive.
Oh. You mean we won't be able to properly document the consequences of cutting power to millions of people. How strange. Now why would anyone want that to happen?
This explains so much. I was trying to figure out why the website wasn’t loading data when the rest of the site loaded earlier... a lack of data would do it.
I can tell you by the smell..the air quality is horrible but we can't use an air filter at home because there's no electricity
