Happy to! If your LinkedIn is up to date (https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnefiong ) then it looks like you're not currently a PhD student, so you would be eligible only if you're applying to PhD programs for entry in 2020. If that's the case, my main tip is strong letters and a clear statement!

No, it's not an external role or an internship; rather, it's funding for students' existing PhD work. Indeed the term "fellowship" can confusingly mean either "visiting researcher someplace else" or "funding to be used while you study at your home institution". We mean funding.
