I often point to SHARE (https://www.share.org/about ) as the the original open source software organization back in 1955

Indeed. When I started in '74 We had a source code listing for the SHARE OS, it was over 400-pages and marked up in ballpoint via numerous people describing various routines etc. Used to later copy concepts into OS/VS1

I learned pretty much everything I needed to know about mainframe programming by reading the then mods on the SHARE Mods tape.... there were no licenses, no copyright... just sharing.
