Timothy McCarthy, in his late 20s at the time, enlisted in the Royal Naval Reserves immediately on his return - within three weeks of his miraculous survival he was killed when the ship he was serving as a deck gunner on was torpedoed.

Alfred Cheetam (left) returned and enlisted - was killed shortly before the armistice in 1918 in a German U boat attack. Some sources say he returned home to discover his teenaged son had been killed in service at sea while he was in the Antarctic.
