BUT as a surgeon and future trauma surgeon I see the effects of gun violence DAILY. So YES there may always be gun violence BUT we have a PUBLIC HEALTH problem. Other examples of public health problems include auto fatalities, smoking deaths and fetal mortality.
Worth resharing: Let's just be clear. I have no problems with the 2nd amendment and I understand it's history. Many of my family members and friends including my husband were in the military and I'm trying to join the national guard.

The way we deal with public health problems is by studying them and creating legislation. This DOES NOT take guns away from responsible gun owners but it would decrease access to civilians to weapons only designed for war (assault rifles) and it would mean instituting things...

like waiting periods, background checks, age restrictions. These are the SAME things we have done with alcohol, driving licenses, and cigarettes (none of which expel deadly bullets at 1700 mph). Will we ever decrease any BAD thing to ZERO? NO!

BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN IT'S NOT WORTH TRYING! I am SO sick of pronouncing these kids, parents, and family members DEAD due to guns! I truly think that if people could spend ONE DAY in my shoes this would be a non issue.

But the reality is that's not possible so please close your eyes and try to imagine the number of times I've had to tell husbands/wives/parents/children that their loved one is dead. The number of times I've displayed heroic efforts to save a life but have failed.

The blood. The guts. The gore. The tears! And if they don't die they are paralyzed, lose limbs, have permanent ostomies and awful quality of life. It's easy to make decisions that only effect ourselves but we need to (as a society) recognize that these problems effect OTHERS.
