    Recently defended Master's student, Dylan Reynolds, leaves for Davos, Switzerland in just a few days! He is pursuing his Ph.D. with the Snow Hydrology Group at the Swiss Federal Institute for Snow & Avalanche Research (SLF). Congratulations Dylan, we cannot wait to visit!! ❄️💧🏔️

    Day two of Snow School, we are lucky enough to be at Hobbard Brook Experimental Forest! Morning lectures have started, and we will spend the rest of the day taking snow depth measurements.

    Happy to be helping out at Snow Measurement Field School this year, after participating last year. First day included snow pits and density measurements in the chilly White Mountains, NH.

    We have equipment manglers ourselves here in Washington ! A few black bears were caught playing with our snow depth poles deep in the Olympic Mountains a few years ago.

    Mountain Hydro students got a chance to spend some quality time with Dr. Matthew Sturm last week while he was visiting . We had some great discussions, exchanged research ideas, and even got snow crystal photography tips from the master himself!

    Visiting campus this week is Geophysics Professor, Dr. Matthew Sturm! Matthew is a frontier scientist in snow & ice research and has spent much of his career on Arctic & Antarctic expeditions. He will be sharing his 30 years of experience through 2 lectures- see attached!❄️

    1st of 2 field trips for 501 grad Forest Community Ecology-a success! Yesterday we visited our research plots in the where we are studying drivers+effects of forest fires on the westside of the cascades. Yr 2 of old growth chronosequence :)

    Check out our "breathing" coniferous Mountain Hemlock trees observed in the Olympic Mountains! They are masters at intercepting snow & appear to breath as snow in unloaded from the canopy... stay posted for an analysis of temperature during these events...

    While skiing we noticed some trees that don't intercept snow. Turns out the beloved coniferous Alaskan Yellow-Cedar tree has shallow roots & unloads snow from it's canopy to insulate & protect them from freezing. High temps & less snow means trouble for these giants...
