We just received a company email that longtime NPR correspondent Wade Goodwyn had died - at the age of 63. Wade’s voice, storytelling, and radio writing was some of all-time favorite listening on NPR. I was an intern on the national desk and used to study Wade’s stories…

The only places in the U District I've found that sell Topo Chico: Supreme Pizza, Boon Boona Coffee inside University Bookstore, and University Market next to Alder Hall. This account is now a Topo Tracker.

Outreach workers from Community Passageways, The More We Love, and others are here with coffee and rides to shelters out of town. This piece of land has been leased to an animal shelter to open a dog park. As part of the lease, the city has to clean the area first.

Happening now in Burien: city workers are removing tents and tossing debris from a former encampment. Some people living here have gotten into a shelter in nearby towns, but at least a dozen have packed up to move somewhere else in Burien.

Seattle was the first major city to integrate kids without a court order. Today, it’s hard to tell that ever happened. Please take some time with this massive project about the resegregation of Seattle schools, which took my colleagues and I more than a year to complete.

🧡Special Report: After the landmark 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision, Seattle schools took the initiative to voluntarily integrate through busing and school choice policies. But today, some schools are more segregated than in the 1980s. #waedu st.news/schoolsegregat

I have a lot I could say but all I will say is that there was a value judgement made here and these roles aren’t valued the way they should be because us and the communities we come from or cover aren’t valued the way we should be.

Cutting 3 reporters (environment, Indigenous and equity beats), a photographer, and a social media person to… pivot to video?! (2015 called and would like its failed media strategy back)

I'm going to miss the orange/ gold. Added some great color to the skyline that really popped, even on overcast days.
The Space Needle painted orange gold on top.

"At one point, she was questioned by one of the organization’s banks about all the withdrawals at casinos. She claimed that the non-profit held youth programs at the casinos and claimed the withdrawals were for cash prize giveaways."
In 2020, Tantico went to work as Finance Director for a different non-profit -- one with a focus on criminal justice issues. Tantico used more than $485,000 of the non-profit’s funds for gambling at casinos. She transferred $21,000 from the non-profit to her mortgage servicer to pay her home mortgage. She also transferred money to her personal bank account. Tantico then altered the bank records to hide the embezzlement. At one point, she was questioned by one of the organization’s banks about all the withdrawals at casinos. She claimed that the non-profit held youth programs at the casinos and claimed the withdrawals were for cash prize giveaways. In all, Tantico stole nearly $893,000 from the non-profit. The non-profit has incurred $132,000 in costs to forensically audit its books, fix its accounting procedures and records, and reply to vendors.
