"and i understand the torrent of criticism i have already received"*
Looks like they did a find-and-replace for “flippant tone.”
yes hm and yet I am still enraged
I imagine a backlash of anger precipaitated the change. While I find the conclusion suspect, across all three iterations, the author does have the right (and platform) to share said opinion. Ill advised as it may be.
I also have a lot of stupid things I can go on and on about yet somehow I don’t have a high-profile platform that implicitly legitimizes my blathering. I am oppressed.
Adding details about how it'll be an entirely outdoor (probably) socially distanced gathering at this point is *incredibly* suspect. If that was the plan all along no one would have cut that language -- any worthwhile editor would have asked to include that in the first place!
I think this is what they usually call “walking it back” just...not usually in the NYT.
Bullshit are they going to have an outdoor socially distanced 7 person meal in late November. How big is that fucking table? What are they going to do when the kids start whining about being cold?
1. The table could be a hexagon w/ 6-ft sides. One person per vertex & one at center. So, 12 feet across for 7 people. 2. Forecast says 66°F here next Thursday. Should be pleasant. 3. Tell the kids to put on their jackets & pass the gravy.
