Supportive departments and fantastic colleagues. UGA cross appointments truly foster development of multi-disciplinary research groups. Best thing I did was move to here.

Also, ironically the Hogness lab's success using recombinant DNA & polytene chromosomes to physically map Drosophila genes was one of the key reasons that the fly community was slow to embrace genomics & why flies were not the first animal genome sequenced

A couple side stories also worth mentioning, Pieter Wensink took the physical mapping tricks from Stanford to Brandeis and trained Botstein & Petes to clone yeast DNA . Sadly Wensink's career was cut short due to a brain tumor:

Echoing , not only did the Hogness lab first clone Drosphila TEs, but in fact the first clone ever reported (pDm1) in the seminal Wensink et al 1974 paper showing the physical mapping of cloned DNA was a middle repetitive TE.

David Hogness has passed away. Words cannot express our depth of feelings about David, but we will simply say that it was a privilege to know him. David, you will be missed.

There is a lot of thing Brian Charlesworth remember about his PhD examiner, John Maynard Smith, and I got lots of funny stories that are a bit local, but what say the most is his silence at the end of the talk. I somehow felt his loss

The uncritically spreads corporate propaganda. This article about Sci-Hub is purely based on hearsay from publishing industry. PSI are not "an independent group.” They are enablers of parasitic corporate publishers.
