Yep. The problem I have with 90% of finger-wagging thinkpieces is that they fail to recognize this basic property of the medium.https://twitter.com/punicgoddess/status/988109582445592576 …

what is more baffling is when grownups think that cinema functions primarily as ethical or prescriptive life training, instead of double glazed windows into alternate universes.

Almost immediately regretted that tweet because now I’m going to get people lecturing me on why it’s necessary to criticize the content of movies, which is something I’ve been doing for 30 years. My point is, cinema has a way of glamorizing what It critiques.

Films that are ambivalent or conflicted run into a lot of trouble because people who are against the thing being shown accuse the film of glamorizing it, and people who want a straightforward glamorization get pissy about the critical part.

I wonder if Catch-22 (the book) spurred any military enrollment.

Movies that are critical of particular experiences or social phenomena often get criticized for “glamorizing“ things when they are funny and/or exciting, which is something movies have to be in order to get made and seen.

Motion pictures were invented to document reality, but as soon as filmmakers discovered that the medium could be used expressively, to provide escape, stimulation, identification and catharsis, things got muddy. They stayed muddy.

The problem is as old as Plato, who also thought that representation risked emulation. People, then and now, with an overdeveloped certainty of how others should live also have an overdeveloped certainty about what others should watch, read, listen to...

Moralistically dictating “how others should live” is garbage, but I rarely think that’s what these convos are about. They’re about striving for a better world. For instance, transphobic media materially hurts me and other trans people by reinforcing transphobic worldviews.
