You clearly have no problem disparaging the quality of a game based on your own tastes. They're both fine games; you should be able to tell that, whether or not it appeals to you, personally.

I shouldn't have to explain this but the tweet was a joke. The comparison between Kratos and Yoshi was in no way serious. Still, I'll gladly disparage plenty of popular games (or praise unpopular ones) based on my own tastes, experience, and perspective. THAT'S WHAT CRITICS DO.

No, that's what bad critics do. Actual critics disparage or praise works IN SPITE OF their own personal biases. I don't even like playing GoW, actually, but it isn't because I think the games aren't amazing.

You should have more faith in your own beliefs and experiences. It's okay to think the God of War games aren't good. The tendency toward consensus in gaming criticism is what's bad, the overwhelming lack of diverse opinions and independent thought.

As for diverse thoughts and opinions in game criticism, those things only have value to the extent that the viewpoints can be defended and justified. Gamers' Opinion and Feelings Monthly is of no use to anyone interested in games.

"To the extent that the viewpoints can be defended and justified?" Sure, but to whom? I've read extremely convincing arguments that Bioshock Infinite is a terrible, terrible game (which it is), but I doubt they would persuade you. It doesn't mean they're without value.

At the very least, to the extent that the critcism is based on an accurate and honest portrayal of the game. If you have to misrepresent the game for your criticism of it to make sense, it isn't justified. There is a difference between not liking a game, and that game being bad.

So it's like a 100% objective thing, every single game is either "good" or "bad," and there's no room for disagreement or differences of opinion about what constitutes a good game, what makes for a worthwhile gaming experience, etc?

As objective as reasonably possible, yes. There is room for plenty of disagreement, again, to the extent that it is honest and based on something more tangible than how someone feels.

Objectivity doesn't enter into reviews at all. It's impossible for a review to be objective. Everything is based on a particular perspective. It may be the culturally dominant perspective, but it is still a perspective.
