It's pretty safe to assume that anyone who dismisses the deeply gendered gatekeeping of a work like Ready Player One as wholly inconsequential has never been targeted by mobs of men and vehemently told that this space is not for you.

I want to thank you for posting this piece. I really didn't understand all the hate for a book that I only remembered fondly. Placing it in the larger context of Gamer Gate makes it perfectly clear.

I think Constance's piece engages with this fairly. It's understandable to me that many of us didn't quite see the harm in the ideology of RPO (and media like it) until GooberGorp happened, so its reception as a fun pop culture romp by many critics makes sense to me.

The gatekeeping and girlfriend-as-a-prize crap had me cringing through the book. I'll probably see the movie (because I can't pass on video game referencing action movies no matter how terrible), but I'm also looking forward to the
@femfreq analysis ripping it to shreds as well.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
