A few seats down from me at Annihilation was a young girl, maybe 10 or so, with her parents. When I glanced over a few times, she was staring at the screen in rapt attention.

If she’s anything like I was, she will be in some small, undefinable way changed by the images of this film, like I was changed by the images of films like Blade Runner and 2001 when I was young. Images that grasp at the inexplicable.

Is that good or bad? If bad, was it rated PG13 or R? I always saw R movies when I was younger, but it seems they were much tamer than movies rated R today. Then again, I remembered people telling me that when I was young, so maybe it just seems that way?

I think that it takes a certain kind of young person but for me that kind of challenging stimulation was definitely good.
