Lambert is the friend you hang out with and you realize he's kind of a douchebag and when you're out together people look at you both and think "there go a couple of douchebags" and you're like but wait i'm not a douchebag this is all Lambert's fault

Witcher 3 does flirting really clumsily but awkwardness and things not working out and second-guessing yourself really well.

There's a bit where you can make the choice to not pursue someone you have a history with who clearly wants you to make a move and even if you choose no Geralt has these very brief like "ugh shit this this is confusing and idk man did i fuck things up?" faces that are so good

And Geralt's like I HAD MY REASONS (i did at least) but he still clearly feels like shit about it. And it's great. Nice moment of bittersweet "that sucks but i did the right thing for both of us but ugh what could have been" feeling.

As a story guy and designer the process of getting two people together in any solid way in a game has never been super interesting to me. Missed connections, awkwardness, fuck ups, etc are far more interesting than having that "win" even on the table.

Either that or I like working with long-term lived-in relationships and those struggles and rhythms. Those are way more interesting to me at least. But it does mean I'll probably never make a dating sim. I'm sorry, world.

If I did make a dating sim rest assured no one would end up together and the dates themselves would go off rails as soon as possible.

The Witcher 3 has just enough pop culture references that I notice them and it's always really jarring. Bounty hunter named Djenge Frett and a master sword maker named Hattori that goes through some exact story beats from Kill Bill. Also some npcs doing Pulp Fiction lines.

I remember hearing courtesans saying "it's a material world and I'm a material girl" and I was always like uuuugggghhh
