Hey guys - just wondering is it ok if I watch MindHunter? As it’s mainly about men killing woman - I’m not sure if it’s sexist or not. Though in times like these we ask ourselves what would Anita do?
It's obvious that you're not really asking but here's an interesting read about it regardless:https://mic.com/articles/186062/mindhunter-is-a-critique-of-misogyny-but-it-still-sidelines-women-in-favor-of-men#.WS4Zfh8UD …
Thanks Carolyn! That’s was quite cool! Though with video games the line is quite blurry to us - to be honest we have no idea what’s acceptable or not anymore- so we trust in people like Anita to keep ourselves pure!
Riiight, I mean, again, I know you're kinda trolling here but just to be clear, it's not really about what's "acceptable" and what's not; it's just about being critically engaged and thinking about the messages media sends.
Well there’s a lot of media and there’s a lot of different messages coming from the media that is totally conflicting. Take Anita - she’s either turning the world into an feminist authortarian society or saving the world from the patriarchy! Which one is it? Who do we listen to?
Yes we do troll - but we try to be thoughtful and nice about it :)
On a more serious note: what’s acceptable to one person may be totally unacceptable to someone else. There is no point playing to the lowest common denominator in the acceptability game. It may be more useful to try to understand why things are to some and not to others-
You will never find a movie - that just happens to be everyone’s favourite movie! Everyone has different tastes and likes - and instead of judging people if they differ from u- maybe understanding y they differ is the way to go. We fear the unknown!
Right but what I’m saying is that it’s not about liking or not liking, acceptable or not acceptable. A great many films/games/etc. associate masculinity with domination and violence. I like a lot of these things. (I’m a big fan of the John Wick movies, for example.)
It’s really just about having a critical mechanism in our minds that’s engaged in observing and questioning those values. What does this movie say about what it means to be a man, or to be a woman? Does it reinforce harmful, limiting ideas in our culture or challenge them?
