There are plenty of games in which you can choose to play as a male or female character. There are plenty of games that specifically cast you as a heroic male protagonist. There are considerably fewer that specifically cast you as a heroic female protagonist.
You think creators put so little thought into their stories/characters as that? And if men so much more often "pop into someone's head" when imagining a "hero" character, that itself is clear evidence of sexist ideas in our culture, and in the creators themselves.

Again, if they "simply didn't care" about gender, then we'd end up with something much closer to a 50/50 split. That's just simple statistics.
