There's nothing inherently wrong with it. But you also can't use a few games that totally center men, in which women are supporting characters at best, as some kind of evidence that gaming is actually totally equal and not sexist at all.
A whole lot of women who for way too long rarely saw themselves in games as anything other than damsels, victims, or sex objects do care, actually.

But why should they? A protagonist needs to be solely fun to play as and doesn’t have to be a certain gender or race.

Representation matters. You may not see it because as a dude you've seen yourself represented your entire life. But the images we see in the media inform our understanding of what it means to be a woman, or a man.
