I think a reason so many game companies failed to reckon with GG was that it would mean acknowledging they had (unwittingly?) cultivated it.

Not at all. I'm just not certain they were consciously aware of the culture they were explicitly cultivating. They still bear responsibility

I'm not sure that was a turning point--there were plenty of awful ads before that--but that was certainly one awful ad.
