The way in Super Mario Bros. you hear Bowser roaring from a distance. The way in Zelda 1 you hear the dungeon's boss from rooms away.
Such a great use of sound. Still creates a sense of foreboding to this day, and lends these simple sprites the quality of fearsomeness.
