I watched NO ESCAPE through a public free preview screening at an AMC theatre last week. The crowd was at least 50% people of color.
But I happened to sit next to a white guy, who noticed me taking notes (don't usually do that, but I started losing track of all the racism)
Afterwards, he asked me if I was a critic and if I liked the movie. I answered "sort of" and "no I didn't like it, did you?" He *loved* it.
But then added, "well I guess trying to add social commentary was odd. Better as a straight action film."
I gave him a quick synopsis of why it disturbed me. He said he did notice that mysterious setting, but hadn't noticed the racism/sexism.
I said bye & looked around at the families of color walking out, felt anger. Not at him, but at the gulf of difference between experiences
I briefly resented not having what he had. "Straight action film." What does that even look like? A movie devoid of any connection to life?
Of course, it doesn't exist. And of course, those connections are what make movies great.
But the fact that straight white American men can watch something as gross as NO ESCAPE and see only its "action" is telling. Depressing.
@imransiddiquee ...are seen as apolitical while games that do challenge their existing worldviews are often seen as having an "agenda."
