I sometimes see people playing really hard old NES games and saying "Wow, and this game was for kids! How did they expect them to beat this?!" But I think in a lot of ways I was way better at games when I was like 9. Faster at learning and adapting, and picking up new skills.

And without gaming magazine cheats at the time.

Funny when I realized that the old games had to be incredibly hard and unfair or else you'd beat them in ten minutes.

Also just the sheer time needed to defeat these things was more readily available

We also had faster reaction times. Maybe just a better sense of timing all together to be able to time those perfect jumps.

Also way more bored. What else did we have to do but play the same level again and again and again till we mastered it?

Yeah it's not like today when you have just like 100s of games. I had, like, 6 games, so most of what I could do was run through them over and over in different ways to keep them fresh.

Some designed this way for fun, others to prolong gameplay, and some (not necessarily NES) were made exceptionally hard to get kids to pay more quarters to keep playing (I'm looking at you, Ghouls and Ghosts).

Kids have the capacity to throw themselves at interesting problems over and over again, and FAQs and guides weren't as ubiquitous back then. I was better at Contra and Bionic Commando as a preteen than I am at ANY game now.

There’s also the fact that most of those games would take 2 hours tops to beat, and kids had a lot more free time on their hands than adults ever did. Kids beat them by spending weeks of nights learning the patterns and just executing things really well after doing them a lot.
