The conversations around pixel art are interesting. I tend to like seeing chunky pixels clearly but it’s probably because in childhood I internalized that the visibility of clearly delineated pixels (as in NES “black box” box art) suggested modernity, something cutting edge.pic.twitter.com/AFDzRSI883

The art that fuels our nostalgia was never meant to be viewed on modern HD displays. What's the right way to update history? Inspired by Square's new Final Fantasy "pixel remasters," my big feature on CRTs and the fight over what to do with old pixels: https://www.vice.com/en/article/qj83yp/final-fantasy-remasters-reignite-controversies-over-pixel-art … pic.twitter.com/PIU5aZRC5K

A absolute love printed pixel art. In books, magazines... anything. And I also love it in games <3

I first read that as "Kung Fu Entertainment System", which sounds awesome! :)

The OG NES box art is some of my favorite packaging designs of all time. I loved how consistent it was despite radically different games being featured using this scheme.

I have to imagine a lot of that was Nintendo positioning themselves against Atari, at least for American audiences. We know that distancing themselves from Atari was a part of their overall business plan with the NES...

...so it's not too much of a leap to assume they'd advertise how much more cutting edge their visuals were than the most popular home console before them.

I'm glad CRT and the effects they have are gone. I've always noticed the "Pixel art looks best on the hardware it was intended for!" people never get nostalgic about the horrible murky blurring on the original Game Boy.
