As much as this game as two camps of people at once declaring it a masterpiece and a shambles, I think there's a lot of people who are just confused how they feel about it. It has a big impact on me but also I think I hate it? A lot of it I think comes from residual feelings...

...from the first game. First one was all character over plot or theme, whilst the second is all theme all the time. Anyway, thanks for writing this! I have been trying to write something on it since it came out but it's just a mess. You nailed it.

Fantastic piece. I struggled with the dissonance between the fidelity of moment-to-moment choices and the unyielding path that the game forces the story down. I struggled with how to write about this and landed on an overly technical take: http://horror.dreamdawn.com/?p=14800315 .

"It's no better to be safe than sorry" seems like the core ethos of this game, but I can't decide if it's a message of nihilistic despair or an invitation to seize an opportunity to grow. I'm not sure Naughty Dog knows either.

I still love this piece of yours and think about it often. I'm almost done my second playthrough of the game and feel the emotional impact of the narrative so differently. I'm more compassionate to both mains, while still being so frustrated with some of the choices they make.
