I strongly believe that video games are a medium that like other mediums has the potential to do great things and sometimes does truly great, wonderful things and sometimes does things that are just OK and sometimes does things that are not very good at all! *crowd cheers wildly*

I've seen people who I'm sure are lovely people in a way unironically say "Video games are a combination of every other artistic medium" and all it made me do was wonder if that person has... *ever* critically engaged with any medium other than videogames.
-
Forgive my potential ignorance, but I'm extremely critical and analytical of all types of media and I'm having a hard time figuring out how that statement isn't, at least in a general sense, true.

I personally feel like video games have the greatest potential of any medium for story telling given their interactivity and potentially branching narratives. Doesn't mean that potential is always used well though.

I love games. I think they’re magic. But I also feel like much of gaming culture is so fannish, it constantly wants celebration rather than critical engagement. Maybe it’s a carryover of nerd insecurity, “nobody gets us,” but as with the MCU etc, games are HUGE. Relax. We’ve won.

i think it kinda mirrors other mediums in their early days, but we hear about it more cause of the internet. i wonder if we would have heard the same kind of thing about tv.

Makes us wonder what percentage of gamers actually critically engage with games on a level beyond just playing the game, and many games you may not want to engage with on a deeper level, which is totally valid

Too many Games PeopleTM (even a few I feel are normally above fanboy logic) repeat but that kind of cultural fragility is hardly unique See MCU fans rage over Scorsese. Or when L*rde sicced her base on a reviewer who gave her album a decent but not exemplary review
-
It's only a matter of time until gamer rage and poptimism collide into some kind of truly awful cultural event tbh
