"Petting the dog" is a useful metonym for the broader idea "interacting with this created world in registers other than violence." It reflects what the game is and how the player engages with its world.

Was thinking of explicitly saying you can't pet the dog in the big con
-
Hahaha I mean I definitely don't think it's bad and of course I support worlds we can interact with in ways that are nonviolent and immersive. I just think some devs have started cynically deploying it as a way to score "wholesome" points in games that...are not that.

It is a reflection of something though, and that is whether or not in the game you can pet the dog characters

Anyone who thinks that petting the dog means that the game lets you do anything other than pet the dog is making assumptions

It is my hope that the BFF Game will have created market saturation for petting the dog, and thus developers will be forced to look to other means to certify the existence of empathy in their studio.
