I love when people expect critics to reinvent the wheel. Like, I mean if you can then that's rad, but sometimes saying "yeah, thing bad" is really all that needs to be said.

Also it’s not obligatory for a critic to say every popular thing is bad. It’s not a sign of intelligence to criticize all popular things to death. Almost all of the respected critics or the harshest ones are also fair. I’m afraid Twitter critics are something else!

Of course there are people, particularly on YouTube, whose brand is contrarian rage. But there are also a great many people who see a thoughtful negative piece by a critic on the cultural legacy of a popular animated film & get angry, thinking critics shouldn't write such things.

People really take criticism personally, as if their opinion is an attack on your taste. In my opinion, the best critics are the ones who can make you think "they make a good point" and put a new perspective on it, even if you disagree with their ultimate assesment.

Look, I know this Shrek controversy is breaking the internet right now but I’ll be honest, I saw it as a child, I thought it was fine then and I literally cannot be bothered to watch it again to decide whether the haters or lovers are correct.

That's totally fine.
