Please note that I'm explicitly not interested in knowing what guides or experts say. If I was, I would just look at a guide.

i stopped using reconstructors when i realized if you respawn during a boss fight it’ll return them to full health. now i just rely on the astronaut figure. probably a bad idea, but now i use ether for cleansing malignant chests late in runs when i don’t want to risk malfunction

Ahh, damn, I was wondering about that! Good to know, thank you! (Also I've only gotten an astronaut figure once so far!

If Cthonos is the receptacle at the beginning, still stuffing it with ether. Seems like a good investment to make all gadgets available.
-
Yeah, that's why I was torn. Having learned that bosses are returned to full health if you die and get reconstructed while fighting one, I think I'll shift back to the Cthonos.

I usually turn my Ether into money and buy the Astronaut figure and the large health pack. That's how I beat the 2nd biome. I still haven't developed a strategy to kill the 3rd boss though.

One pro-reconstructor argument: even though bosses return to full health when you revive, you go back in knowing the attack patterns of their early phases and can more easily avoid damage early on. That’s explicitly how I got through the second boss fight.

My experience is that it is a game where that type of strategi works just fine.
I farmed ether for about three hours before I passed on a bit. Just because I like it.

My drive for permanent unlocks means I still feed it even though in roguelikes it can often mean you’re diluting the pool.
