"She hates and loves Returnal, as she hates and loves herself." Gandalf re: me

Are there a few other games you could compare the difficulty/curve to? Or maybe the feel of the difficulty? I haven’t researched this game yet and really all I’ve heard is discussions of its difficulty. Thanks!

It's tricky. Maybe something like Spelunky (in terms of difficulty specifically), but with considerably longer runs. It also often recalls for me the difficulty of classic shmups and NES games, but not specific individual games, just a general ethos of difficulty from the past.

I had a lot of trouble with that second boss but eventually got it... I’m with you that the Ether economy feels borderline cruel sometimes, I avoid spending it on reset or cleansing unless I’m confident I can hit the next milestone (barely ever, then).

It definitely feels like a punishing game, but not a game that hates me. Almost every time I die it’s my fault not the game’s.

I think this thread sums up Returnal for me, if only I’m a little further in progression. I am glad I haven’t read much about it, but man it’s tempting sometimes. I just died 3 times in a row without getting out of the first area.

Yeah I've had stretches like that too where I don't even get out of the first area for a few runs.
