Because of the way a high adrenaline level in Returnal leads to increased weapon proficiency, I feel like to be truly successful at the game, in true shmup fashion you have to go for long stretches without taking damage. This guarantees I will never be successful at Returnal.

this is 100% where I am at with the game, that being said, I found myself finally having some success last night and getting past my block-point. I do wish the game was... more creative and less focused around taking zero damage tho (imagine the fun builds you could do)

I kinda respect Housemarque's commitment to shmup-like purity, and don't really want Returnal to be like 3D Hades or whatever, but yeah, I hear you.

I mean, I would say that if it fulfills that need well, that's a good enough reason to say you like it?

The story and environment and visuals all look incredible. I’m just worried about trying to fit a game into my life that requires uninterrupted play for 4-5 hours at a time. I really do want to play it eventually. gosh, I hope they patch in some sort of “save and quit” feature.

None of my runs has lasted nearly that long yet (of course I’ve only made it to the second area thus far), and putting my console in rest mode has worked for now if I do need to stop mid-run, but I understand that’s not ideal for everyone.

That's what MMOs do for me. "Yes there is an insane amount of work that needs to be done... but if I can do the hard time-consuming thing that just released then I will feel that at least I'm good at this instead of failing at the other!"
