I think the original motive was supposed to involved around a virus plot line, but they decided to write that out after COVID happened obviously.

I think this is an issue with a lot of marvel (and superhero stuff in general). They want to try to do some social commentary, but lack the commitment to really go into depth on anything, so they use buzzwords (i.e. the flag smashers talking about "borders")
-
Another example of this is in Winter Soldier. There's a lot of talk about surveillance, freedom versus security, etc., but there's no discussion of what any of these things mean. It just becomes Cap and friends fighting Hydra in big action set pieces

Isn't it simply the GRC (which is a collection of worldwide governments) displacing people who moved into countries & places other people lived, after the snap, into refugee camps or sending them home, which opposes the open borders that existed during the 5 year blip?
-
I guess that maybe like some other folks I just thought there had to be more to it than that. That seems like a pretty reasonable thing to want.https://www.thewrap.com/the-falcon-and-the-winter-soldier-what-is-flag-smashers-endgame/ …

They want to stop "global repatriation" and be allowed to stay where they settled, or at the very least received housing, access to food and housing. It seems pretty clearly laid out in the episodes....am I missing something?

IMO the MCU’s most glaring weakness has always been it’s aggressively centrist (or, just as often, blatantly right wing and jingoistic) politics I say that as someone who genuinely loves most of those movies still while acknowledging how fucked they are
-
But the flag smashers specifically feels like such an unforced error, it’s wild. Like they took the always problematic subtext and just made it text. While still trying not to actually say anything

Completely agree. One reason it's hard to figure out is that they don't get to do that much. Most of the time they stand around while the leader gives a speech. The definition of tell don't show.
