I really think that seeing stuff like 2001 and Blade Runner when I was young and they were just a bit over my head was crucial for my development as someone who appreciated that art wasn’t something that needed to be understood literally.https://twitter.com/CasparSalmon/status/1380991276997312512 …

I really don't want to be mean, but young people aged 13 and up can basically just watch grown-up films, they aren't babies. Put them in front of some vintage Ken Loach. pic.twitter.com/9Y4VKhcXBj

Could not agree more. My parents mostly let me see what I wanted to—and I was a weird kid with more interest in Annie Hall and The Big Chill than, say, Porky’s—and it’s one of the greatest gifts they ever gave me.

The Simpsons and MST3K made me want to learn to get the joke. There's no reason I should understand so many Yale references.

This resonates so strongly with me too, I was 14 or 15 when I saw Blade Runner in the theater.

We spend a lot of time pushing the needle on our nearly 5yo. Always slightly past her comfort zone, and then, if necessary, work our way back. One hilarious byproduct of this was Kong vs Godzilla was too much, so we watched old man in suit clips. It was very funny.

I wish more of the things that upset me as an adult had "man in rubber suit" clips I could watch on YouTube.

some of my best movie memories are being a kid and seeing something "inappropriate" for my age on HBO with the volume super low and being blown away. Saw Goodfellas like this. Giving older children the space to push their own boundaries helps them appreciate art.

This was actually really instrumental for me, especially since I grew up in Quebec where very very few movies are considered extreme enough to get a rating higher than 13+. I went on a massive binge around that age with VHS rentals of many "R-rated" classics.

I think watching cinema that goes over your head early, makes you appreciate it more as you revisit it when you're older. I found a much deeper appreciation for Scorsese, Leone and Coppola when I revisited them; from having watched their work with my dad when I was much younger.

It's not exclusive to film of course, I just used film as an example. Same goes for other forms of art too, in my experience.

Completely on board with this with my own kid. Absolutely enjoyed 2001 just for the sound and beauty at age two.
