Started watching Saving Private Ryan because it happens to be on Netflix. Haven’t seen it since it came out. I remember there being a lot of backlash about this issue or that issue, but I can’t remember what they were. This is a staggering piece of filmmaking.

It's not even that big of a problem. It's visual misdirection, maybe, but it doesn't violate the logic of the film. Seeing as how Reiben and Upham both survived, either one of them could've told Ryan about what they went through. That's why Ryan envisions it as if he was there.

This annoyed me so much because that's not quite true. Yes the scene ends with a close up of the old man's eyes, but the next cut to the fladhback shows an establishing shot of the sea, *not* Tom Hanks' eyes. So the movie doesn't tell you "these characters are one and the same".
