Started watching Saving Private Ryan because it happens to be on Netflix. Haven’t seen it since it came out. I remember there being a lot of backlash about this issue or that issue, but I can’t remember what they were. This is a staggering piece of filmmaking.

This is a movie that goes 40 minutes before it gets into the main plot. Just 40 purely imagistic, mythopoetic images. An absolute masterpiece. And the remaining two hours is pretty fucking great as well.

Just remembered that a lot of the “problematic“ readings of the film had to do with the framing device. But it makes the film. Of course this guy would imagine the experience of the people who rescued him as a World War II movie, but X-rated for violence. A subjective imagining.

I remember some folks having serious issues with the film zooming in on the old man and then we're with Tom Hanks but it turns out the old man is not Tom Hanks! As if the film had violated some hard and fast law of how cinematic language works.

It's not even that big of a problem. It's visual misdirection, maybe, but it doesn't violate the logic of the film. Seeing as how Reiben and Upham both survived, either one of them could've told Ryan about what they went through. That's why Ryan envisions it as if he was there.

This annoyed me so much because that's not quite true. Yes the scene ends with a close up of the old man's eyes, but the next cut to the fladhback shows an establishing shot of the sea, *not* Tom Hanks' eyes. So the movie doesn't tell you "these characters are one and the same".

This type of person would complain that the montage at the beginning of the film Arrival was out of place and should have been merged with the one at the end. My God
